Journaling Prompts for your morning cup of coffee

Updated: May 19, 2020

I forget when exactly I realized how much I enjoyed journaling...was it at the young age of 12 when I had a lock & key diary where I wrote about my latest crush or was it a few years ago when I graduated from diary to journal and from crushes to self reflection? Regardless of when, word vomiting your thoughts on a blank page is strangely meditative whether it be string of consciousness or prompted by one of these that I will share below.

I'm very pro-journal if you can't tell.

I do most of my journaling in the mornings and now that we are stuck inside and I have nowhere to rush off to, I have zero excuses as to why I shouldn't. When this first started two months ago, I started the habit of writing:

3 things I am grateful for

3 things I want to believe about myself (ie. I am...)

1 thing I am excited for today that got me out of bed

Now that we've been doing this for awhile, my journaling habit has evolved a bit. Some days, usually the days when it is harder to feel positive, I follow this 3-3-1 model but lately, I have been writing through a prompt - either something I think of or find online.

Here are some of my favorite prompts to accompany your morning journaling and hopefully add a little bit more light into your days.

1. If someone were to describe you, what do you think they would say?

2. What are some traits you wish you could embody and what is something you can do today to work towards one of them?

3. What is something you know about yourself now that you didn't know a year ago?

4. What would you say to your younger self if you had the chance?

5. What is something you need more of in your life?

6. Who in your life do you need to forgive? What is stopping you?

7. Who is someone that inspires you?

8. Write as many things you like about yourself as you can think of!

9. When do you feel the most peaceful?

10. What are negative things you believe about yourself? Why do you believe those things?

11. Write a letter to your anxiety.

12. If there were no financial or physical limitations, where would you go or what would you do?

13. Why do you think you were put on this earth?

14. What's not working in your life right now? How can you change it?

15. What do I wish someone told me a year ago? What do I need to hear today?

16. What is a painful experience that helped you grow?

17. What do you need to forgive yourself for?

18. What is a place that makes you happy and at peace?

19. What does your dream life look like?

20. What kind of person do you want to be in twenty years?

I hope some of these inspire journaling of your own! If you have any prompts that you enjoy, I would love to hear them!
